Naperville Public Library Holiday Closures and Special Hours
The Naperville Public Library keeps a short, predictable list of closings each year. For the rest of 2026 that means an early close before Thanksgiving, closed on Thanksgiving Day, closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and an early close on New Year's Eve. This guide lays out the whole 2026 calendar, the patterns behind it and what we know (and don't) about 2027.
Quick answer: what's left in 2026
- Wed., Nov. 25: all locations close at 5 p.m.
- Thu., Nov. 26 (Thanksgiving): all locations closed.
- Thu., Dec. 24 and Fri., Dec. 25: all locations closed.
- Thu., Dec. 31: all locations close at 5 p.m.

Patterns worth knowing
Holiday weekends close on Sunday too
For Memorial Day and Labor Day, the library closed on both the Sunday and the Monday in 2026. If you usually rely on a Sunday visit, the long weekends are the ones to plan around. Saturday of those weekends was a normal 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. day.
Early closings land the day before a big holiday
The two early closings, on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and on New Year's Eve, both move closing time from 9 p.m. to 5 p.m. Opening time stays at 9 a.m. If you plan to use a study room or public computer that evening, move your plans earlier in the day.
Downtown events affect only Nichols Library
Nichols Library sits in downtown Naperville, so big street events there can change its hours while the other two branches stay on schedule. In 2026 Nichols opened late (1 p.m.) for the St. Patrick's Day parade and race and closed for two days during Last Fling, the Labor Day weekend festival. Naper Blvd. and 95th Street kept their normal hours on those days.
One staff training day
All locations closed on Friday, August 28, 2026 for staff training. A closing like this has no holiday attached to it, which is exactly why it catches people off guard. Checking the official list before a visit avoids the wasted trip.
What about 2027?
When we checked on November 3, 2026, the library's closings page covered 2026 only. We do not publish 2027 dates until the library does. To help with early planning, the table below shows the 2027 dates of holidays on which the library closed in 2026. These are not confirmed closings; they are simply the days most worth double-checking.
| 2027 date | Holiday | What happened in 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Fri., Jan. 1, 2027 | New Year's Day | Closed Jan. 1, 2026 |
| Sun., March 28, 2027 | Easter | Closed Easter Sunday 2026 |
| Sun., May 30 and Mon., May 31, 2027 | Memorial Day weekend | Closed Sunday and Monday in 2026 |
| Sun., July 4, 2027 | Independence Day | Closed July 4, 2026 |
| Sun., Sept. 5 and Mon., Sept. 6, 2027 | Labor Day weekend | Closed Sunday and Monday in 2026 |
| Wed., Nov. 24 and Thu., Nov. 25, 2027 | Thanksgiving | Early close the day before, closed Thanksgiving in 2026 |
| Fri., Dec. 24 and Sat., Dec. 25, 2027 | Christmas Eve and Day | Closed both days in 2026 |
| Fri., Dec. 31, 2027 | New Year's Eve | Closed at 5 p.m. in 2026 |
Our open-now checker follows the same rule: on these 2027 dates it shows “Check first” rather than guessing.
Curbside on early-closing days
Curbside pickup normally ends 30 minutes before a building closes. The library's curbside page does not list special hours for early-closing days, so if you're collecting holds on November 25 or December 31, call 630-961-4100 to confirm the cutoff.
When the buildings are closed
A closed building doesn't mean no library. The digital collection is reachable online with a card, and it includes OverDrive/Libby for ebooks and audiobooks, hoopla for music, movies, TV and books, Kanopy for streaming film and TV, a Children's Digital Library, and online newspapers and magazines. The library says it offers more than 85 digital resources in all. Our Naperville library services guide lists the borrowing limits for each.
Returning items late over a holiday is also less stressful than it used to be: the library does not charge overdue fines. An account locks once an item is seven days overdue, and a replacement fee is billed at 45 days, so a long weekend on its own won't cost you money.
How to check for unscheduled closings
- Open the library's Hours, Holidays, and Closings page. It lists scheduled closings and is the place schedule changes are announced.
- If the trip is for something specific, call the branch's Customer Services line: Nichols 630-637-6322, Naper Blvd. 630-637-2215, 95th Street 630-637-4921.
- For downtown event days, check the Nichols Library entry specifically, since the other branches usually keep normal hours.
